Diego Maradona Undecided On Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi Debate
In an exclusive interview with France Football, Diego Maradona for the first time changed his tune when dragged into the debate of Messi and Ronaldo. In the past, Maradona was certainly going to pick his compatriot over Cristiano Ronaldo anytime he’s asked to about the two greats. However, it seems the Argentine legend is having a sudden change of heart now that Ronaldo is getting more recognition.
Diego Maradona was recently on an interview with France Football, where he discussed many topics about the past and the present. The legendary forward even revealed he would so much love to score another “Hand Of God” goal against the English, with the right hand this time though.
One of the greatest football players of all-time, Diego Maradona, equally revealed he nearly signed a new contract with Marseille when he was in his peak. But then, it was his statement about Messi and Ronaldo that was the most surprising of all his statements during the interview. He obviously respects what both stars have done and achieved throughout their glittering careers.
Definitely, Diego Maradona doesn’t think any player both past and present were better than him, but at least this time he shows that he no longer thinks Lionel Messi has the edge over Cristiano Ronaldo. It shows how age is exposing both players and what legacy they can leave behind when they retire, particularly Lionel Messi.

Diego Maradona Interview Summary
The football legend had a lot to say about the past and present in football scene, with the most fascinating one among them being his current stance on Ronaldo and Messi debate.
“Messi and Cristiano, Cristiano and Messi. For me, these two are a cut above the others,” Diego Maradona told France Football.
“I don’t see anyone approaching them. Not a single personal [will] achieve half of what they do.”
He then talked about his desire to score another goal with his hand (right) against the English side.
“I dream of being able to score another goal against the English, with the right hand this time.”
“The leaders of Marseille contacted me and offered to double my salary,” he added, referring to his near transfer to Marseille.
“I was playing in Naples at the time and president Ferlaino told me that if we won the European Cup (the UEFA Cup), he would let me go,” Maradona continued.
“[Marseille president] Bernard Tapie and [manager] Michel Hidalgo even came as far as Italy to see me to make me a proposal and so that we could all discuss it together.”
“Once I returned to Naples I said to Ferlaino ‘thank you President for all these beautiful years, I am going,” said Diego Maradona.
“At that point, he started playing the fool, like he didn’t understand, and he backtracked. End of the story.”
