Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-range effort against Olympique Lyon in the rounds of 16 tie has been voted the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League Fans’ Goal of the Season.
The stunning strike from the 35 years old forward against Lyon has beaten Marcel Sabitzer’s goal from matchday three to add yet another personal accolade to the Portuguese’s impressive gallery.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored both goals in the 2-1 win over the French side, but Juve was eliminated with a 2-2 aggregate scoreline, having been beaten 1-0 in the reverse leg away from home. However, it was Ronaldo’s second strike that earned him the award. He picked up a pass from the edge of the area before firing home with his left foot from outside the area.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has now won the prize UEFA Champions League Fans’ Goal of the Season for the third season running. In 2017-18, his bicycle-kick strike against his current team Juventus won him the awards, and again, his powerful volley against Manchester United in 2018-19 season saw him voted the winner. Now he has won the award for three consecutive seasons.
In the processing of winning this year’s UEFA Champions League Fans’ Goal of the Season Award, Ronaldo beat competition from Marcel Sabitzer, Juan Cuadrado, Luiz Suarez, and Serge Gnabry, who finished behind him in that order.
Elsewhere in the nomination but didn’t make the final five cut were Maxwel Cornet, Erling Haalan, Dani Olmo, Lautaro Martinez, and Douglas Costa.
Meanwhile, UEFA’s technical observers will also be announcing their own official top 10 goals of the season. The Award for the UEFA Champions League Fans’ Goal of the Season is decided by a poll on the website of the governing body of European football.
